January is a time for meeting newly engaged couples, catching up with past couples and their lovely new additions, designing albums and planning a lot of fantastic things for 2012.

January is also good for catching up on some blogging from some more of our 2011 weddings - and what better way to start the year than with the lovely wedding of Louise and Sean, who were married in Stirling and had their reception at Glenbervie House Hotel.

Louise's day started at her parents' house with her entourage of beautiful maids.

I just loved this pomander for Louise's wee flowergirl. All the beautiful flowers were from Fleur de Lis

Meanwhile, it was all hands on deck at Sean's mother's house.

Stationery was all done by Zoo

Louise and Sean, it was such a pleasure getting to know you and your family and friends. Thank you for having us with you on your big day.

Our last wedding of 2011 was so much fun!
Sarah and Andy live in the UAE, but Andy must be the most well-organised and hands-on groom we've ever come across and they both made organising a wedding abroad seem completely effortless.

On the day, every little detail was perfectly planned and everything went so smoothly - Andrew, perhaps you should consider an alternative career as wedding coordinator?

Andrew and his ushers started their day with a spot of cricket - using the RING BOX as a cricket ball (thankfully Andrew was too good a bowler for the box to actually get hit...)

Meanwhile, Sarah and the girls were getting pampered by the Preen team...

Beautiful flowers by Planet Flowers

Sarah and Andy were married by Humanist celebrant Tim Maguire in a beautiful, personal service.

After the service Sarah and Andrew braved the cold with us for a few moments to capture the fading daylight.

An avid Dr Who fan, Andrew was allowed to choose the table names.

Sarah and Andrew, thank you for sharing your big day with us and finishing our 2011 wedding season on a real high!

Rowena & Robin's Enchanted Forest Winter Wedding, Kelso | Wedding Photography

We always knew Rowena and Robin's wedding was going to be a pretty awesome occasion. When they first told us about the day, the vision and the people involved, we knew that it would take a lot of hard work to pull it off, but if anyone was going to do it, here was the right team.

The plans for the reception venue was to create an Enchanted Forest; and with the help of Carnival Chaos, Tower Events, Wilde Thyme, Laura Eberst and some crafty friends, the vision was delivered to perfection.

The weather gods had played their part and delivered a beautiful white cover for the ground and bright blue skies above.

Add into the mix 10 adorable flowergirls and pageboys in blue Harris Tweed, each with their own little lantern and you really couldn't have made the whole thing anymore amazing.

Rowena and her team of kids, mums, family and helpers all started their day at her parents' beautiful house.

I love the addition of cones and twigs in Rowena's bouquet. Shame you can't photograph the smell...

It's handy having nine usher when there is snow shoveling to do and flowers to carry...

After the ceremony, we headed back to the house for a few formal photographs.

I loved this little idea - reading glasses attached to the seating plan!

Moira and David were married in the Scottish Highlands on a rare hot and sunny day and we loved being there to capture it.

This wedding makes me smile every time I think about it.

From our very first meeting, Charlotte and Allan have spoken about their wedding day with contagious excitement and we had been looking forward to the big day almost as much as they had.

And how could we not be excited? Two stunning venues in the centre of Edinburgh, a friendly, laid-back couple and some incredibly talented wedding suppliers all made this day really special.

A special mention to Mette from Freja Designer Dressmaking, who not only made the beautiful wedding dress, but also did the stunning outfits for the bridesmaids and the mother-of-the-bride.

Charlotte started her day in the Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street. Charlotte's lovely natural make-up was done by LG Makeup.

The wedding service took place in the chapel at Fettes College, one of Edinburgh's most iconic buildings.

Charlotte is a musician and music teacher, so a lot of thought had gone into the music and hymn choices for the ceremony. The 14-person-strong choir were the best choir I have ever heard at a wedding.

The wedding reception was held at the magnificent Signet Library, where Heritage Portfolio and Flowers by Maxwell had worked their magic.
The Upper Library in the photo below was described by King George IV as "the finest drawing room in Europe" - easy to see why!

Sally & Rod, Hopetoun House, South Queensferry, Edinburgh | Wedding Photography

You may remember Sally and Rod from their engagement shoot on Yellowcraig Beach earlier this year. Such a happy, easy-going couple, they couldn't have been any nicer to photograph, so needless to say, we were really looking forward to their big day.

When the day finally came, it would appear the traffic gods were trying to put a spanner in the works. With 3-hour delays on the Forth Road Bridge, many guests found themselves struggling to get to Hopetoun House on time, so the ceremony was delayed by 30 minutes to leave time for as many guests as possible to get there.

Throughout this, Sally was a picture of calm, happily playing with her very sweet nieces and nephew and getting ready with her family in a cottage in the grounds of Hopetoun.

If you could bottle cuteness...

The evening ended on a real high note when The Red Hot Chilli Pipers surprised guests with a great performance.

Sally and Rod, thank you for having us there at your wedding, it was a truly fantastic day. We loved seeing all your hard work, thought and effort paying off - I can't think what you could have done better (bribed the traffic gods, maybe...)

We are so lucky in Edinburgh to have so much natural and cultural beauty around us. With an extinct volcano in its centre, and beautiful parks and gardens spread in amongst the beautiful architecture of the city, there are so many wonderful locations for photographs here, whatever your preferred backdrop.

Anne-Marie and Andrew got the best of both worlds for their wedding. They had chosen to get married in the heart of Edinburgh, yet our photo shoot on Arthur's Seat felt like we were many miles from civilisation.

Anne-Marie's day started in the Caledonian Hilton Hotel with her maids and very gorgeous niece and nephew.

Meanwhile, Andrew and his ushers were getting ready in Edinburgh's Old Town before walking to the church.

After the service, we headed to a misty Arthur's Seat with Anne-Marie and Andrew for some photos. With road closures around Edinburgh and the Bupa Great Edinburgh Run the following day, we are eternally grateful to Lindsay from Ecosse Classic Cars for his quick thinking and for getting us there safely.
(When we got up there I realised it was 4 years to the day that my husband proposed to me on Arthur's Seat, which made the shoot extra special for me!)

We then headed back to Caledonian Hotel on Princes Street for the wedding reception. The rain, which had been threatening to start all day, finally let rip as we were safe and warm inside.

The beautiful function room was set up for dinner with autumnal berries adding touches of colour to the flower decorations.

Anne-Marie and Andrew, we had such a fantastic time photographing your wedding - thank you for letting us be part of your day. Our trip to Arthur's Seat will always stick in my mind!

Since meeting Zoë and Marcelo for the first time, we knew their wedding day would be just brilliant - they are both such bubbly, beautiful people with the most infectious happy energy about them.

Nicola & John, Dornoch Cathedral & Midfearn | Wedding Photography

We first met Nicola and John when we photographed John's sister's wedding four years ago - Nicola was a bridesmaid then and John an usher. When they contacted us about their own wedding, we were really excited at the prospect of seeing lots of familiar friendly faces again.

So we set off from Edinburgh one rainy morning, driving all the way to Dornoch for what promised to be a brilliant highland wedding.

Nicola's day started at her parents' house with her maids and family.

Nicola's friend had made the bridesmaids hairbands as well as Nicola's hairpiece.

After a wet and cloudy morning, the clouds lifted and the sun came out in the afternoon as we arrived back at Midfearn.

The sunny autumn afternoon meant that speeches could take place outside.

Is this the most glamourous Grandmother-of-the-Bride ever?

The wedding cake was made by one of Nicola's friends.

Small gold-lined envelopes with guests' names on them contained notes with their tablename.

Luggage tag place cards were tied around wedding guests' napkins.

Kirsty & Robert, Double Tree by Hilton - Dunblane Hydro Hotel, Dunblane | Wedding Photographs

As a wedding photographer, you often spend more time with the bride or groom than many of their friends or family. It's important to establish a good relationship with the couple, so they relax in front of the camera and let you capture natural moments throughout the day.

We always feel privileged to share a couple's wedding day with them and love to capture all the little details they have worked hard for months to organise.

When I first met Kirsty and Robert they were both so easy to get on with and were happy for us to advise and guide them on how and when would be best to take photos. So when the Big Day finally arrived with more sun than we'd seen for weeks, we were really excited about the day that lay ahead.

I started my day with Kirsty and her maids as they were getting ready.

The colour theme was "Cadbury purple".

From the window, the girls were able to see the guests as they arrived at the hotel without being seen themselves.

While Kirsty and her maids were in one end of the hotel, Robert and his ushers were getting ready at the other end.

After dinner, many guests headed back outside to enjoy the warm evening sun.

Not everyone appreciated the music...

We had such a fantastic time capturing this wedding! Kirsty and Robert are so close to their family and friends- we really enjoyed getting to know so many of them.

Sally & Rod's sunny Sunday engagement shoot

On a Sunday afternoon after one of the wettest July weeks I can remember, I made my way to East Lothian for an engagement shoot with Sally and Rod.
Hoping for a sunny day, we had cancelled, then rearranged then cancelled the rearrangement - even a couple of hours before we were due to meet, it was touch-and-go whether we would see any sun. But as we arrived, the sun was shining brightly - surely this must be a sign that the weather gods are on Sally and Rod's team and their wedding day later this year will be gloriously sunny!

Sally and Rod, I had so much fun on our shoot and can't wait for the big day to get here!

Melanie & Paul, Balgonie Castle | Wedding Photography

Sometimes you have to travel half way around the world to find the perfect person to marry. Melanie, who is originally from Australia, met the love-of-her-life Paul when she came to Edinburgh, and their wedding day helped to seal the bond between their Aussie and British friends and family.

Melanie and Paul both love Scottish history and Scottish castles, so getting married at Balgonie was the perfect choice for them. With a Scottish Laird overseeing the day, a spiritual ceremony with vows written by the bride and groom and an owl playing a important part in their ceremony, this was a wedding steeped in traditions, new and old.

Melanie started her day with her two best friends at the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh.

Paul and his ushers also started their day in the Balmoral Hotel before travelling up to Balgonie Castle.

The chapel at Balgonie Castle has no electrical lights and only very small windows. Lit only by candles, the atmosphere is almost medieval.

The couple's wedding rings were delivered to the Best Man by an owl!

"I promise I will love you and cook for you every day"...

A hand fasting ritual was part of the spiritual ceremony.

Lighting a Candle of Unity.

A brief break in the rain allowed guests to shower the new Mr & Mrs King in confetti!

...and then back inside the chapel and castle for a few shots of the newlyweds, while the rain poured down.

The Great Hall, which still retains its original 14th century features was used for the wedding meal.

We had been looking forward to Rebecca and Marcus' wedding for a long time; a genuinely lovely couple getting married in one of central Edinburgh's best venues, The Royal College of Physicians.

Despite a veritable monsoon happening outside, the whole day was full of happiness, with the couple and their guests having a fantastic time, warm and dry inside.

Rebecca's day started at her parents' house, along with friends and family.

At Royal College of Physicians, we had time to explore the beautiful rooms with Rebecca and Marcus before their guests arrived.

Moira & David, Aswanley, Huntly | Wedding Photography

One of the perks of our job is that we constantly discover new parts of the country, see some of Scotland's fantastic countryside and gorgeous wedding venues. For Moira and David's wedding we travelled north to Huntly where we discovered Aswanley, a Victorian steading set in well-kept, beautiful grounds with incredible views all around. Moira and David came across this venue quite by chance and we are so happy they did, so we discovered in it turn!
When we first met with Moira and David they told us they were hoping to have a fun, outdoor, personal party. They had decided that if - on the off-chance - they had a nice day for their wedding, they would have the ceremony outside. I don't think they really believed that would happen, but on the morning of their wedding day, the sun shone from a bright blue sky and it continued to do so for the rest of the day, so they had the outdoor ceremony and party they had hoped for!

Moira and her entourage of lovely women started their day at Castle Hotel in Huntly.

Moira's 1-year-old niece Daisy loved hanging out with all the big girls.

David's mother had arranged all the flowers.

Moira's brother walked her up the aisle.

Moira's uncle gave her away.

Humanist celebrant George Caldow performed a beautiful wedding ceremony.

A hand-fasting ceremony was performed with ribbons carrying the family tartans. We are told that's where the term "tying the knot" comes from.

The grounds at Aswanley are so beautiful and with lots of fantastic spots for photos, the challenge is when to stop.

The Huntly & District Pipe Band made an appearance, surprising and delighting all the guests.

Moira, in turn, surprised and delighted the pipe band when she had an impromptu jig in amongst them!

Moira and David, we are so happy you had the perfect outdoor, happy wedding you had hoped for. We were so pleased to be part of your day and loved capturing it all.

Kate & Chris, Coos' Cathedral, Aboyne | Wedding Photography

In Scotland we are blessed with so many fantastic venues to get married in - from impressive castles to sandy beaches, stately homes to ruined churches. The Coos' Cathedral in Aboyne is one of the unique venues that can be made to be anything the bride and groom wants it to be - an old empty stable building, which can be decorated and arranged in extraordinary ways by the more visionary, creative couples.
Kate and Chris are one such couple, who worked hard in the run-up to their wedding to make Coos' Cathedral look absolutely incredible. With homemade bunting, wild flowers in tin cans and beautiful celadon shades of green throughout, the converted stables were the perfect setting for a sunny summer wedding.

Kate, her maids and her family started their day in a beautiful, light-filled cottage nearby.

Kate's bridesmaids looked so lovely in their Freja tailor-made dresses - matching the bridal car beautifully!

Meanwhile, Chris and his family and friends were getting ready nearby.

Guests enjoyed lemonade and teacakes as they arrived at Coos' Cathedral.

The couple's humanist ceremony included a traditional quaich ceremony to symbolise the sharing and the bond between the couple.

The sunny weather and lovely grounds were perfect for our couple photos.

The dining area in the great hall was set up with banqueting tables for the dinner.

Kate and Chris, we had such a fantastic time at your wedding - thank you for having us there and for making it all so much fun to capture.

Annabel & John, Sprouston Kirk & Kersquarter, Kelso | Scottish Wedding Photography

Here is a fantastic what's-not-to-like wedding that we just loved photographing and are thrilled to share with you.
Annabel and John had chosen to have their wedding reception in the beautiful gardens of her parents' farmhouse, and had chosen to let the family's farming background and love of the outdoors guide the themes of the wedding.
Despite the relentless rain, the wedding was the most fantastic midsummer garden party with so many carefully planned details and ideas.

Most of the flowers in Annabel's bouquet had been picked in the garden that morning.

Being late is a bride's prerogative...

We loved Annabel and John's bridal carriage.

The rain stopped just long enough for us to get a few photos of Annabel and John in the lovely grounds.

An ice cream van appeared at the reception, much to the delight of the younger guests....

...and everyone else!

Brownies and coffee eclairs by the talented Gill Orde were served at the reception.

The place cards doubled up as dance cards.

After dinner, the newlyweds wowed everyone with their first dance.

Annabel and John, we so loved everything about your wedding and still smile when thinking back on the day. You are such a fantastic match for each other - we have really loved getting to know you and your families.

We wish you lots of joy and happiness together and Annabel we're sure you'll enjoy learning the rules of cricket too!

Sophie & Tim, Dundas Castle, South Queensferry, Edinburgh | Wedding Photography

Here's a wedding we'd really been looking forward to capturing. Ever since meeting Sophie and Tim over a year ago, we knew this was going to be an amazing day.

Sophie is originally from Germany and Tim's origins span from England to Austria to Isle of Skye via Denmark, so a number of different wedding traditions were brought together on this day.

They had put a lot of thought and care into the plans for the day and chosen some really fantastic wedding suppliers to make sure everything went as smoothly and looked as gorgeous as possible.

Sophie and her maids got ready in the Winter bedroom of Dundas Castle.

I was so in love with her Sassi Holford wedding dress from Rachel Scott Couture.

"Something Old" - the beautiful tiara Sophie wore

"Something New" arrived in a little box from Tim.

Meanwhile, in a bedroom not so far away...

Sophie was piped to the ceremony by Pipe Major Roderick Deans.

After the ceremony we had time to capture a few photos of the newlyweds.

Heather's Cakes had set up this tempting table of treats

...and made the beautiful wedding cake - 150 beautiful cupcakes.

The dancing started with a traditional Austrian Father-and-Daughter waltz.

This was followed by Tim and Sophie's first dance as husband and wife.

Tim had arranged a photobooth from Gigglepod as a surprise for Sophie.

Sophie and Tim, we had such a wonderful time at your wedding! Your happiness and love of life are contagious in the extreme - we still smile when looking at the photos and remembering your beautiful day. Thank you for sharing it with us (and for making me cry! Again!).

I'm really excited about working on the photos from this wedding - so many fantastic details it has been a struggle to decide which photos would make it to the blog. Where do we start? To-die-for Vivienne Westwood wedding dress? Vintage teacups at the old-fashioned summer party drinks reception? Adorable flowergirls in cute dresses, the six-singer soul band, the awe-inspiring venue, the stunning jewellery?

As always, it was great working with Heritage Portfolio and Flowers by Maxwell who all did an incredible job.

The drink reception was like an old-fashioned summer party with lots (and lots) of lovely details.

We are really excited about showing you this wedding - a new, amazing venue, a beautiful couple and a marquee with a twist - there's plenty to love about this wedding!

When an events organiser gets married, you know it's bound to be fantastic - so when Nick (who runs Events Company Splendid) and Victoria told us about the plans for their day at Dunglass Estate, we knew we were in for a treat.

Victoria was getting ready in Dunglass House with her family, maids, a kitchen full of aunties and a garden full of kids.

Meanwhile...

The church ruins in the ground don't have any windows or doors. An indoor wedding outdoors! Nick and Victoria had made a feature of the old stonework by placing moss and flowers in the gaps.

A few spells of rain quickly passed.

Nick is an events genius, and his events company Splendid had carried out his vision for the bright, green marquee perfectly.

The evening sun made an appearance through the windows.

Jo & Ross, St Mary's Church, Dalmahoy & Orocco Pier, South Queensferry | Scottish Wedding Photography

As a wedding photographer in Scotland, it can sometimes be a challenge to plan and prep for a wedding shoot. Rain gear or summer suit? Wellies or ballet pumps? Photos in the woodlands or indoors all the way? We tend to have an in-case-of-rain-Plan-B (and C and D...) in case the weather doesn't do as it is told.
For Jo and Ross' wedding day, it looked like Plan B was required, as the weather report promised full-on rain all day. Rain coat, umbrellas and lens cloths were packed, but when we arrived, there was no hint of rain, so it was back to the warm-Scottish-spring-day-Plan-A!

As we headed to South Queensferry, the sky was starting to look ominous, but thankfully it stayed dry for our shoot by the Forth Rail Bridge.

Back at Orocco Pier some of the wedding guests were propping up the bar with old friends...

...while others were busy making new friends.

The newlyweds were piped to their table.

Some of the younger guests decided the wedding cake needed more decorations.

Nick & Victoria Pre-wedding Shoot, Edinburgh | Engagement Photography

Victoria and Nick's pre-wedding shoot was one of those times I am reminded why I'm so lucky to be a photographer living in Edinburgh. On a day which was supposed to be a complete wash-out, the Scottish weather came up trumps again and we had a gloriously sunny day for our stroll through Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town.

Considering their wedding is only days away, they were both very relaxed, refusing the let the pressure of a never-ending to-do list get in the way of our shoot.

We are so looking forward to their big day (a lot of great details and plans in store!) and keep our fingers crossed the weather will be good to us again that day.

Victoria and Nick, thanks for being so easy-going, it was a great afternoon!

From the beginning, Alice and Nick's wedding was always going to be unique; an early-morning outdoor ceremony next to a huge field of rapeseed was the back-drop for this Scottish-Chinese marriage.

As Alice and Nick live in China they were keen to pick a weekend of fantastic weather to show Scotland in its best light to friends and relatives who had travelled many many miles to be there - a statistical analysis of the weather showed that 30 April was very likely to be a sunny day, and they were absolutely right!

Everyone had worked hard to ensure that the day would be a success, adding lots of personal touches throughout.

Alice's day started at Norton House Hotel, where she was getting ready with her family and four very sweet bridesmaids.

Meanwhile, Nick and his family and ushers were getting ready at Nick's parents' house, which was also the setting for the wedding. Alice and Nick's love affair first started there, so the choice of venue was a very personal and sentimental one.
The wedding's red and yellow theme was helped hugely by the beautiful rapeseed growing in the field next to the house!

Bishop Richard Holloway conducted the service beneath the yellow and red sails suspended from the house.

Time for playing in the field!

Later in the day, guests gathered at St George's School for Girls for the evening reception.

We love it when the bride gets up to say a few words - Alice's speech to her parents and her new husband was done in both English and Chinese.

The red and yellow theme - and Nick's love of Lego - had inspired the wedding cake and table decorations.

After the dinner, the couple waltzed their way through the first dance...

...before they were joined on the dance floor by friends and family for some Scottish country dancing.

We wish Alice and Nick lots of happiness in their life together and hope the Chinese part of the their wedding will be as happy and beautiful an occasion as the Scottish one was!
